January 2012 Featured San Diego Blues Artist
|
After fronting San Diego-based band, Tell Mama, Missy felt it was time to strike out on her own. Her self-titled debut album, Missy Andersen, released on Main Squeeze Records, is an organic mix of soul and blues from another era with a healthy dose of today. She displays her talents on 8 tunes, including two originals - New Feet (track 2) and Stand Up and Dance (track 8). Missy Andersen (vocals) is joined by her husband and bandleader Heine Andersen (guitar), Asmus Jensen (drums), Jeppe Juul (organ) and Søren Bøjgaard (bass). Additional musicians include Nathan James playing Dobro slide guitar on track 8. Read more about Missy Andersen at www.missyandersen.com. |

Regular
hosts of one of the finest blues jams around - at Fat Catz in Encinitas
every Wednesday night. Attracts the best locals as well as artists
in town for gigs. Joe Walsh has sat in with them at least 3 times
I know of. Lee Bittner, drums, played for Big Brother And The Holding
Company and recorded Spirit In The Sky with Norman Greenbaum.
A real pro! Barry, vocals/guitar, is soulful and knows the blues
from top to bottom. Joe Zito, bass,
lays down traditional lines with an up-to-date feel that keeps tunes
fresh and interesting. Jim Volkert, guitar, is a scorcher. Whether
it's a laid back shuffle or a deadly slow wailer of a tune...his
tone and searing guitar work take you on a ride you don't want to
get off of. Thanks

Ken Schoppmeyer is certainly the blues icon everyone goes back to for roots of San Diego Blues. Besides being a blues harp wizard, he has encouraged, and let sit in his bands just about anyone that wanted to come up and go for it at the Wind. Most of the blues pickers around town owe Ken a thank you or two. I know I sure do for dragging me back out of the closet during those times I thought picking was on the downhill side for me. Remember Ken was doing blues years ago before the general public thought it was a cool thing to do. A true San Diego Blues Legend. San Diego's Graybeard 335 Guy 7/1/03 |

Mannion is one of my local blues heros, and I've been doing this
blues thing since the 60's in San Diego. Johnny, is first and foremost
the kind of guy that will brag about everyone else. Well, I'm going
to toot Johnny's horn, as no one has more passion for our art than
Johnny. Years of playing with Tom Cat, jammin' with Ken Schoppmeyer,
and hanging around Moze Guitars, Johnny has learned his roots well,
and delivers a true venue. He and Mike Gonzales can "wang that
thang", if you don't believe me check out Sweet Blue Onion

Tomcat is the father figure of San Diego blues and has helped so many young players over the years. I was fortunate enough to have played with Tomcat from 1985 to 1991 and it was the greatest learning experience of my life. Tomcat
is one of the kindest and FUNNIEST people you will ever meet. I was up
at Moze guitars one day when Tomcat came in. We were talking and this
young kid came up to him and said "Your B.B. King aren't you!"
Tomcat said "Nah I ain't BB King" the kid kept on. "Your
BB King I know you are". Tom smiled and said "I ain't BB King".
The kid would not let up."Yes you are I know you are" Tom Cat
finally said in his slow Texas drawl "Man I am MUCH better lookin
than BB King". We
all laughed so hard. Tomcat was always a gentleman and is still a gentleman.
I am proud to have spent my youth playing with Tomcat and learning from
one of the Masters. He can say so much with a single note. Thank
you Tomcat. |

West of Memphis . . . http://www.westofmemphis.com
REVIEW By Bob Pavich I'd
like to take this space to review as well as I can the "West of Memphis"
show at Joltin' Joes in Escondido friday night. The band started pretty much on time and their first number set the tone for what was to come...they almost took the roof off of Joes! Most of the night was uptempo "Chicago" style blues numbers like "Sweet Home Chicago". They slowed it down in several spots for a few tunes such as a volcanic rendition of "Stormy Monday Blues" and others. There was one stand-out tune of the night; an original written by the guitarist in the group, Tom Walpole, called "Monkey Business". It had a likable hook and the main guitar riff was very inventive...you can tell when a song has that "something" and this one did... While I'm talking about guitar riffs, I think I should mention the band members talents. Tom has obviously been woodshedding because he was "on fire" last night. The man is the encyclopedia of blues riffs! If you want to hear what electric blues sounds like when played like Buddy or B.B. would play it...ya gotta hear this guy...Karl Cabbage you're familiar with; was a wild man as usual. From his amazing harp technique to his onstage "humor" he works the crowd as you would expect...he's a wild man! The bassist Doug Brunelle showed just how accomplished he was playing some amazing bass solos throughout the night but mostly playing VERY supportive understated bass; you really need this kind of a bassist to sound solid. Speaking of solid; the drummer, Joe Ralph was a rock of solid blues groove! No slop there! he was like a cross between Charlie Watts and Jim Keltner...he's just there doing an unbelievable job...he had a solo and showed a little of his ability but just like Doug his greatest asset is rock steady time... Also that night through some unusual circumstances they had a guest guitarist or two...one of whom was Tom Walpole's younger brother Andrew. He tore off some blues of his own in addition to handling percussion support at times... All
in all it was a great time and it was a classroom of how to play "Chicago"
style blues. It's not often you have this kind of talent working right
next to you and I recommend seeing these guys if you get a chance.. |
