Born:   April 9, 1895 Navasota, Texas

 Died: January 30, 1976

Hit Songs: "Trouble in Mind" "Bout a Spoonful"

The Blues Hall of Fame ® Interviewer: . . . . .. .Mance Lipscomb lived from 1895-1976 and performed over 300 different songs of all types, but he also performed about 100 different blues songs.

He performed blues in A, B, C, D, E, and F, and he performed songs in the 8, 12, and 16 bar formats. He also did some numbers in odd patterns such has his version of "Bout a Spoonful", which was a 9 bar blues.

He was a contemporary of John Hurt, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie Johnson, Leadbelly, Blind Blake, and others who did songs in the early blues styles. He was a strong influence on others who are listed here, such as Janis Joplin and Lightnin' Hopkins. He was a farmer, sometimes sharecropper, and saturday night musician. He had a hard life, but music made his life better. He deserves to be listed in this site. Michael Birnbaum 2-20-10
